1998 Safety Performance Goals

Our Vision and Mission

NABORS/SUNDOWNER Supervisors, Managers and HS&E personnel set their vision and mission for 1998.

They report that their vision for SAFETY is "To have an incident free workplace where employees work as a TEAM toward a common goal of PROACTIVELY managing SAFETY in order to prevent worker injury.

In addition, the group wrote a mission statement to enhance the direction of these goals. Their MISSION is:

To PROMOTE a work environment based on employee involvement, ownership, teamwork, training, and leadership;
To DEVELOP self-esteem, empowerment, pride, enthusiasm, and optimism;
To REINFORCE the need for employees to support and care about their co-workers;
To PROMOTE the philosophy that SAFETY is not a priority that can be reordered, but is a VALUE associated with every PRIORITY;
To RECOGNIZE group and individual achievement.

These steps will provide a resounding message to the rig crews that NABORS/SUNDOWNER is committed to a work environment where people think SAFETY first.

Key Elements to Achieve Success in Safety

In addition to writing the mission and vision for the implementation of the goals, the group identied the following as the means to achieving their goals:

Management's unwavering commitment to Safety and the Environment;
Employee ownership of the Safety Process;
Supervisor accountability for Safety and the Environment;
Rig level and Management level TEAM Building;
Total participation in Behavior-Based Safety Management Process, from Entry-level to Upper Management;
Management visibility on rigs;
Managing Short Service Employees;
Establish a Roustabout/Floorhand Training Facility;
Comprehensive Alcohol and Substance Abuse Testing Program;
Incentive Plan focusing on proactive efforts, as well as results.

Annual Safety Plan for 1998

The following is the 1998 Safety Plan established by the SUNDOWNER/NABORS OFFSHORE Operations Management Safety Committee.

The members of the Safety Committee have committed themselves to achieving each of the action items below:

Continue training all supervisors in Behavioral-Based Safety, STOP Techniques, Leadership, and Safety Management by way of Supervisor Safety Workshops.
Each Operations Manager will:
Identify specic crews to conduct Rig Crew Safety Workshops;
Identify areas for improvement and incorporate into training;
Communicate Management's Commitment to SAFETY and the ENVIRONMENT.
Upper Management and Operations Managers will visit at least ONE rig per MONTH. Our GOAL is to visit at least a combined total of five rigs per month.
This commitment will:
Demonstrate Management's commitment to SAFETY and the ENVIRONMENT;
Provide "new eyes" an opportunity to observe and identify potential areas for improvement
Enhance our current Short Service Employee Program by establishing a Roustabout/Floorhand Training Facility to prepare new employees for rig assignments.
Provide more technical training for Supervisory personnel such as Top Drive, BOPs, Valves, etc.

This commitment reflects the dedication by employees of NABORS/SUNDOWNER for an incident-free work environment in 1998.
