The Animal Kingdom

Alive and Living in the Oilpatch

In an effort to capture all those wild animal terms used to describe oilfield related work, we are continuing our list of "creatures" that reside on the well platform. No one knows how these terms originated, yet the oilfield hands are quite familiar with the function of these words. For those who overhear or read these terms, we wonder just how those animals reside onboard!

Cathead:
A winch on which line (rope, cable, or chain)
is coiled.

Possum Belly:
A revolving tank situated at the end of the mud return line. The flow of mud comes into the bottom of the device and travels over baffles to control mud flow over the shale shaker.

Ram:
The closing and scaling component on a blowout preventer.

Gooseneck:
The curved connection between the rotary hose and the swivel.

Doghouse:
A small enclosure on the rig floor used as an ofce for the driller and a storehouse for small objects..

These are just a few examples. Can you think of others? Let us hear from you by fax, phone, or e-mail with other wild beasts residing on the rigs!
